The Outer, Inner, and Secret Refuge Practice of the Mahasiddha Thangtong Gyalpo
Download
the specific refuge prayer that Rinpoche suggested that we recite to support those in need entitled The Outer,Inner, and Secret Refuge Practice of the Mahasiddha Thangtong Gyalpo. The following is an excerpt from a talk given by Rinpoche on the significance of this prayer:

When you take refuge in the three jewels with devotion on behalf of someone who's died, the three jewels are immediately going to be there and see the whole situation clearly, since you're making that connection. Where can the deceased escape from the broad view of the three jewels? Their compassion, blessings, and guidance will be immediately there. Even though the dead don't know how to make that connection, if you make it on their behalf, they immediately make the connection as well. Therefore I think doing the practice of refuge, reciting the refuge over and over for the deceased, is very powerful, especially during the first forty-nine days. The prayer we should do is Avalokiteshvara's refuge prayer, called The Outer,Inner, and Secret Refuge Practice of the Mahasiddha Thangtong Gyalpo.  This prayer is very helpful. I do it all the time, day and night, whenever there's a need. It was given directly to Thangtong Gyalpo's teacher by Avalokiteshvara himself for Thangtong Gyalpo to spread, and later he received it from his teacher and spread it. It has been one of the most powerful refuge prayers of all. I've given it to a few people to do it, to transform their life circumstances and different difficulties and patterns, and it seems like it really has worked wonderfully.

Please continue to hold my 4-year old niece in your prayers. She is doing much better, but is still in the hospital and has only spoken once since it all started in late January. They diagnosed her with Meningoencephalitis, but of the viral type, which is less serious. They have no idea how she got it. A full recovery is expected, but it will require lots of therapy.

Thanks!

Please pray for my father who had a heart attack early Christmas morning.

I wish to ask the Sangha to please keep him in their prayers right now and dedicate some merit to him that this may be a blessing in disguise and he may have a swift recovery.

It is hard not to worry about our parents right now as they age and encounter health problems...i know many of our parents are facing that right now, so let us dedicate this also is to all our parents who are facing old age and illnesses.

with much love,

Jennifer

Dear Noble Sangha,

As many of you have heard, this is possibly a critical time for Ruth. I would like to encourage all of us to step up as a community and give our support to her and her family. She has been a great inspiration to us all and a strong Sangha member and friend.

Please see this as a precious opportunity to extend and serve.

Yours Truly,

Rinpoche

Please contact Deana Reid (720.771.2334 mobile) or Leah Regulinski on how to go about visitiing, supporting her family and what to expect.

Letter from Bill Howard (Ruth's Son):
"Mom seems to be getting more and more confused and disoriented. She also seems to be going into a world of her own where she can have conversations with herself. She is much less stable now as well and doesn’t seem to walk much, all tell tale signs of her mind and body beginning to say "I’ve had enough." The more she can focus on family and friends the better, Peggy and I have decided. We had a meeting with the social worker at Manor Care, and they have determined that mom really shouldn’t be left alone. They are looking for more people to visit. Mom can be found at the nurse’s station as they are not leaving her alone. I think if things progress, we may not have an abundance of time left. We are also looking into hospice care for mom. Anything you can pass along to the sangha will be appreciated and I know mom will appreciate the company of any and all visitors. You might warn people that mom may be completely out of it during the visit, but to talk to her and merely comfort her would be very much appreciated. As always, thanks!"

Michal Lura Friedman lost her life on Friday, November 25, 2011 in New York City, due to complications from a c-section shortly after delivering healthy twins, Jackson James and Reverie Vivian Snyder. Michal was a beautiful, talented woman who was thrilled to be pregnant with her first children. Many of you know "Michal the Girl" as a musician, but her greatest dream was to be a mother. For seven long years she and Jay tried to make this dream come true. Michal was widely loved, and leaves behind loving family and many friends in her Buddhist and music and voice communities. Please pray for Michal and her family.

Dear Sangha,

I am grateful for the prayers and kindnesses extended to us during my dog Thaddeus’ sickness and death. Thaddeus and I were able to join the welcome party for Rinpoche’s teaching at Gomde in California. Shortly after the weekend teaching, Thaddy was able to leave this life with ease and peace, surrounded by loving arms.

Thank you, Tina Toriello

Dear Noble Sangha,

Smudge passed at 16.20GMT on Sunday 23rd October. I would very much appreciate your prayers for him to be reborn in Dewachen without other births intervening. He has been my loving companion for 20 years and bore the cancer with great nobility and dignity. He died in peace and equanimity in the living room.
Yours in the dharma,
Jennie

Dear Rinpoche and Noble MSB sangha, please keep my cousin, Fernando Ramirez, in your prayers. He died of liver cancer this past Wednesday, October 19 at 5:15 AM in Colombia. May he, through the power of our prayers, find a good rebirth and a connection to the Noble Dharma, and find liberation so that he himself be able to benefit countless beings as well. Thank you all very much.
All the best,
Alex

Please include Leigh Kirkland in your prayers. She has adult onset lukemia and has been undergoing chemo to prepare for a bone marrow transplant. As a long-time practitioner, she is meeting her life-threatening condition with courage. Leigh's daughter Jesse has come from the west coast to Boulder with two very small children to help her mom. The situation is challenging and difficult so they need all of our prayers as it progresses.

Please keep my stepfather, Traven's father, and his family in your prayers. Jon Macaulay has been missing since Thursday. It is believed that he went up hiking
at his favorite hiking spot the Long Lake trailhead. We discovered his car at the Long Lake parking lot near the trail head on Friday afternoon. Boulder County Sheriff and Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue have been conducting a major search effort since Friday afternoon and have still not found him. Search efforts are continuing, and the family is doing quite well considering the circumstances. Also please keep all the rescuers which includes a large group of search dogs in
their prayers as well. They have been truly amazing and are all volunteers.

love, Nicholas

Dear Sangha,

Please hold in your prayers Janet Esrock, a friend and colleague, who is now in the bardo. We received word today of her passing last night. She sustained severe injuries in an auto collision several weeks ago, and never regained consciousness. Please pray to help her quiet any fears and confusion in the bardo, and help her to see her life as a journey toward enlightened existence. Please pray that she will find her way in progressing toward an awakened state, free of excessive pain and hardship. Please also pray for her family, her husband and three children, that they may be helped in finding peace with their loss; and view Janet's life as a blessing and inspiration.

Thank you.

I am humbly requesting prayers for a dear momma Bear and her 2 tiny baby cubs. She was killed 8/27/11, by overzealous deputies. The babies are now just laying on top of her.

The citizens of Crestone have been dealing with the bears all summer because of the drought and shortage of food; coming into town has been necessity of survival. She has lived harmoniously with us and nightly found refuge at Steve McDowels, frolicking in the water tank at night etc. Last night one of the other bears did kill a goat… and the deputies take it out on the easy target who sleeps in the same place every night.

So now the babies are just laying there; maybe they will take them to a refuge but their chances are slim.

I know there are differing views on wild animals… but we are all in their land and we are all trying to survive the summer drought and we are all sentient.

So please I ask the sangha to please pray for them, momma, cubs and goat.

Your truly, Mary Newton

Noble Sangha,

Please hold in your prayers Janet Esrock and her son Jonathan. They were struck head-on in their car late last week on the way home. Jon has recovered consciousness, but has many broken bones. His mom, Janet, is clinging on via life support, as she cannot yet breathe on her own. She appears not to have sustained any brain damage, but her organ systems are beginning to fail (esp. kidneys). This sounds bleak, but the family takes heart from the fact that she has survived for more than 72 hours already, and the physicians explain this at least is hopeful. Janet is a wonderfully kind and well-loved teacher at the school where I work.

Thank you,
Mark Kram
