Garbha - Recommended Teachings Set 2

Recommended Teachings Set 2 continues from Set 1 to lay a stable ground of understanding as Rinpoche addresses questions and hidden confusions, freeing us to engage deeply with our practice. Lojong presents the pith instructions on bodhicitta, the heart of Mahayana practice. An exploration of Lenchak, or the karmic debt which pervades many of our relationships, follows. Patience delves deeply into the practice of non-violence. The Four Marks of Existence explains the Buddhist understanding of reality. Lojong - Seven Points of Mind Training

In these compelling teachings Rinpoche provides commentary on Atisha's Lojong, or Seven Points of Mind Training, and how they describe an excellent practice to access the essence of Buddhism: vanquishing the enemy of grasping to self, and cultivating the mind of cherishing others. He places of emphasis in his teachings on the reasons for and potential benefits of practicing mind training.
"In just one day, so much goes on in our mind. If we are not present with what goes on in our mind, where are we? This question is very important to ask yourself. One must be present. One cannot take vacations from one's mind."

Patience: Bodhisattvacharyavatara Chapter 6

Rinpoche gives poignant commentary on the Patience chapter of Shantideva's Bodhisattvacharyavatara, presenting the 72 ways the mind gets disturbed and discussing how the "pain of immunization" against one's self importance is necessary in developing patience. He covers a wide range of topics during these teachings, from detailed discourse on how wishing enlightenment for all beings is the only true expression of kindness and compassion, to clear and direct exposition of all appearance as illusory:
"All appearance is just luminosity of one's mind manifested, then solidified due to lack of self-awareness."
Rinpoche has indicated that students should listen to these and other teachings on the Bodhisattvacharyavatara given at the Lotus Garden, where he has gone into more detail on the text than ever before. Ten talks on a single MP3 CD. Lotus Garden 2007

Through increasing one's clarity that all things in the world exist due to causes and conditions, Rinpoche explains how to develop patience and tolerance -- both for those around us and for ourselves.
